The induction of new SPJ members will take place Tuesday, April 26 at 5 p.m. in the UC. We’re currently scheduling the room, but once that is taken care of, I will send out an e-mail for an update. Also, if anyone needs to be inducted into the chapter, please send an e-mail to usispj@hotmail.com, or talk to myself, Briana or one of the advisors.<br /><br />2. We need to know who is planning on going to Las Vegas for the convention in October. Like #1, e-mail usispj@hotmail.com if you are doing so. This will determine the rates that we can get and the amount of fundraising needed.<br /><br />3. Speaking of fundraising, a suggestion came up during the meeting. Pizza Hut and Papa Johns have fundraiser cards that basically work like coupons for pizza. I’m going to look into this, as it’s something we could do early in the next semester.<br /><br />4. We’re planning on having officer elections before the end of the semester. These will probably happen during the induction ceremony on April 26. If you are interested in a position, you know the e-mail address.<br /><br />5. Discussed High School Media Day. The event will take place on Assessment Day, November 15. SPJ will be involved in this event. Ideas for the Day include advisor’s sessions, getting the Shield staff involved and taking a tour of the college media (Shield, AccessUSI, AM 820).<br /><br />6. Finally, the SPJ Region 5 Conference at Northwestern University in Chicago will take place this Friday and Saturday. I will be attending, and will post in the blog my report on what happened.<br /><br />That’s all for now. For those that don't know, SPJ, Shield, AM820, the advanced reporting class, and others helped out in the audit, which meant obtaining records deemed on the record by the Indiana Open Records law. Unfortunately, the audit showed that there were some organizations that didn't hand the information over, and some didn't even know what the record was, or didn't know about the Open Records law. Shield, AM 820 and possibly AccessUSI (I’m going to try and contact Jen, the news director.) will be releasing stories relating to last semester’s FOIA audit. That will take place on Thursday. <br /><br />For Sunshine Week on Thursday and Friday, we will be setting up a table in the LA building. SPJ is launching a campaign called “Tell Me Where to Go.” The goal of this campaign is to educated students about FOIA, what information is available to the public and, of course, where to get that information. We will be handing out buttons and flyers at the table. SPJ members are expected to work the table on Thursday or Friday. More details about this to follow.<br /><br />Also, at the same table, we may have people write down what information they want to know and where to get it. A top 10 list will be printed in the Shield the following week.<br /><br />We are setting up a roundtable discussion for April 6 at 7 p.m. in Kleymeyer Hall. Among the guests were considering are Sherrianne Standley, Barry Hart, members of the student press as well as the Courier and Press, and, possibly, some members from state organizations. <br /><br />Induction for new SPJ members has been changed. It's still a while out, so it shouldn't be too much of a big deal. However, there is a better deal for the Aladdin, the host resort. SPJ members can get a $99 a night rate for staying in the resort during the convention. As you may know, it will take place at the Medill School of Journalism (Northwestern University), located at 210 S. Clark St. in Chicago on April 15 and 16. <br /><br />First, registration information. Registration forms are not available yet, but it will cost $35 for students, $45 for professionals. Also, we have to let Richard Roth, Region 5 chair, know asap if we are interested in the luncheon (of course).<br /><br />The programs this time around look a heck of a lot better than last year. At least this time, you have some choices. <br /><br />On Friday, April 15, Joe Cappo will be speaking at P.J. Clarke’s, 302 E. Illinois St., in downtown Chicago. He's promoting his book "The Future of Advertising: New Media, New Clients and New Consumers in the Post-Television Age,” and has a lot of advertising experience. According to the SPJ website, "Club Quarters is a so-called business travelers hotel, with Spartan and often-small rooms, but cheap.
